3 Unspoken Rules About Chicken Keeping (That No One Warns You About)
Share
If you’ve kept chickens for more than five minutes, you’ve probably realized… there are a few “unspoken rules” no one tells you about beforehand.
They’re not in the beginner guides.
They’re not in the checklists.
But every chicken keeper eventually learns them the hard way.
Here are three that almost all of us discover sooner or later:
1. Never pick a favorite chick
(It will either die or turn out to be a rooster)

No one warns you about this, but somehow… it always happens. I found this out the hard way when I was about 11 or 12. I always got the most attached to the chick who always seemed a little smaller than its siblings. More often than not, that chick simply never recovered from shipping from a hatchery, or in one case, it was a victim of a freak accident.
The one chick you bond with immediately - the one with the personality, the one that follows you around - somehow becomes a surprise rooster, or the one that breaks your heart. It’s a hard lesson in chicken keeping. Now, I like to say that every chick is my favorite - just in case!
Is this scientifically proven? No.
Is it universally believed by chicken keepers? Absolutely.
The real takeaway here: enjoy your chicks, bond with them, love them… just know that chickens have a way of keeping you humble. Especially chicks, which are so delicate.
2. Chicken math is very real
(And it will get you eventually)
You start with a few chickens. Then, comes the, “Well… a couple more wouldn’t hurt,” “They need friends,” “That breed is so pretty,” or my personal go-to, “Think of how pretty that egg color would look.” Next thing you know, your “small backyard flock” has quietly doubled.
Chicken math isn’t just about numbers, it’s about how quickly chickens become part of your daily life.
You don’t just keep chickens… you start building a flock.
3. Your chickens will choose the worst possible place to poop
(And they will commit to it)

You can give your chickens a beautiful coop, 5 acres to roam on, and all of the roosting and foraging areas they could wish for. And somehow… they will still hang out and poop on:
- Your front porch
- Your favorite chair
- The one spot you just cleaned
Chickens have strong opinions about where they like to be, and unfortunately, those opinions don’t always align with yours. I’ve heard of some keepers who managed to train their chickens to avoid a certain area but I personally never had any luck. Instead, I use a few techniques to keep my backyard space nice, including:
- Fencing off the garden (top the fence with chicken wire or something equally flimsy so they can’t perch on it).
- Keeping my flock in an enclosed run most of the day - only letting them out to free range (and cause chaos) for a few hours a day.
Chicken keeping is full of these little realities that no one really explains upfront.
But honestly? That’s part of what makes it so fun. You learn as you go, you adapt, and somewhere along the way your chickens become part of your daily rhythm — quirks, messes, and all. And if you’re anything like me, you wouldn’t have it any other way <3
If you love the personality, chaos, and joy that comes with keeping chickens, that’s also the heart behind Flock Box — a monthly box designed to make caring for your flock feel a little easier (and a lot more fun).
